SPOT ON ROOTS
MARTIN IBSGAARD

The Danish Folk Council launches a new initiative during SPOT 2009 - informal lunch concerts at Fairbar featuring sublime folk with Helene Blum & Harald Haugaard and rebel roots with Faroese Dánjal.

As usual, the Danish Folk Council presents some of the best acts the Nordic folk/roots scene has to offer at SPOT. This year, the festival audience will be introduced to Helene Blum & Harald Haugaard Band, Valravn along with Swedish Baskery. Furthermore, the Danish Folk Council launches a new initiative in cooperation with Fairbar - lunch concerts on Friday and Saturday at 12 pm - a pleasant warm-up to the festival.

Friday, Helene Blum & Harald Haugaard Band will give an acoustic taste of the evening concert at Archauz. The violin virtuoso Harald Haugaard has – despite his young age – an impressive musical career in the bag playing in various contexts and constellations. Recently, he has received great reviews nationally as well as internationally for his first solo album “Burning Fields”. His partner, musically and personally, Helene Blum, is a rising star on the folk scene. She is praised for her exceptionally beautiful voice, and her debut album “En gang og Altid” (Once and Forever) has received equal recognition. For the concert, the Danish folk duo appears as a quartet with Kirstine Elise Pedersen (cello) and Rasmus Zeeberg (guitar).

Dánjal will perform his blend of balkan and folk.
Saturday is dedicated to Dánjal, who has gone crusading with his captivating brash pirate-folk. The Faroese storyteller conquers Fairbar with his trio and a show of dramatic musicality. Inspired by the energetic pulse of Balkan-rock and Tom Waits' cabaret notes, Dánjal takes you on a journey across the ocean, featuring music that, like the Faroese weather, changes from storm to sunshine within a second. The musicians are: Dánjal (piano and vocal), Andreas Birk (violin) and Kim Nyberg (Mandolin).

Seize the opportunity to enjoy a light lunch, served with a solid side dish of live folk and roots music at Fairbar.
